OIC Portrait Day - May

Unsold pieces from Portrait Day on 2 May, done in pencil and poster colours. (I'm giving the brown paper portraits a short break! ) We had our first outdoor Portrait Day session at the Homeclub by the Singapore River. It was fun, and an interesting experience having so many people watch us as we drew!

Palette knife oil painting class

My completed first painting from my palette knife oil painting class. Measures 18x18. This was completed on the third session - each session is approx 3 hours. It's interesting learning how to use a palette knife, and enjoyable accepting the surprises you get while painting! My teacher is Mr Wee Shoo Leong - more information about the class HERE.

Go green!

A little project I worked on about creating awareness about saving paper/trees, going green. Installation done with green vinyl sticker - shapes were cut out manually and pasted on the wall, across the corridor floor and to the other side. (Thank you for the nice photos, Wisnu!)

I wanted to create the effect of stepping into a green zone, or walking momentarily into a little forest, and within the zone, you could read the little signs to learn more about what our consumption of trees/paper was.

We laboured over the concept for a few days. Luckily, the setup took less than 2 hours, thanks to the help of 3 of my colleagues!

Some other installations were also done to create awareness of paper consumption within the office. Below, we calculated how many sheets of copier paper was used in a year for a group of departments - 6,085,280 sheets!!

Hopefully, the installations help my colleagues think about using paper more thoughtfully. I'm a culprit myself - I consume a lot of paper, and also hoard it! (esp nice sketchbooks and notebooks!)

It seems that on average, an average tree makes only about 8,300 sheets of copier paper. That's only about 16 reams of copier paper. My calculations tell me that I use up one tree in every 18 months!

I've got several trees to my name already, and I hate the idea that I'm killing them :( I'm more conscious about how much I consume these days (paper, water, clothes, food, etc). The earth's got my commitment to consuming less, creating less waste and creating more good! :)
