Starlight

Not my usual style, but it felt good to try something different. Splattering paint was fun.
Acrylic ink and acrylics on canvas board. 16"x24". Acrylic ink is great - easy to use and fast drying - I'm converted! Still will turn to acrylics for texture and dimension though. The board was first laid with some pages from a chinese graphic magazine I bought in HK.
I like the close up of the face more than the entire picture. Composition-wise seems to lack some interest. Serves me right for not planning! I just took the brush and got at it and this is the result after 2.5 hours.
My last painting for 2008 (unless I manage to inadvertently get some painting done in the next 14 hours!)
Happy new year! :)

November mural #2

A hop, skip and jump away is the Children's Club, also operated by Viriya Community Services. They wanted a mural that was in the same style as My Centre @ Moulmein. So this time round, the subject was children. We had a lot more walls to cover and fewer volunteers. We stopped after 5 hours after all the drawings were done on Saturday 29 Nov, and we'll be heading back soon to touch up on the lines. It's officially opening this Saturday!

The view of the Children's Club from the back of My Centre @ Moulmein. The walls were already painted orange.

November mural #1

You can find this mural at Kent Road, facing the Pek Kio Market. It's for a senior citizen's activity centre called My Centre @ Moulmein, operated by Viriya Community Services. Thanks to the volunteers at My Centre and to Li-Anne for helping out on Saturday, 8 Nov.

A view of the entire wall. It was already painted orange, so we just added the blue. The mural was intended to highlight some of the activities that the centre organises. It looked like rain that day, and so we worked fast. Finished it in about 4 hours.

I don't want Mei Mei anymore!

It's finally out in the bookstores! "I don't want Mei Mei anymore!" is a book about a little boy who comes to terms with his baby sister blues. (Story by Lynn Lee, illustrations by Phua San San)

I started work on the illustrations for this children's book in June 2008. This one of the books from the “First-Time Writers & Illustrators Publishing Initiative” for 2008, an initiative from the Media Development Authority (MDA) and the National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS) to nurture talents in the publishing industry. If you have a story or illustrations for a children's books, click here to find out more about the 2009 initiative details.

The book is 32 pages, 22 x 22 cm and is out in bookstores now at S$9. Here's a look at some of the pages inside.

Children's picture books are a genre I never got to explore properly before. For this project I went through quite a few books for reference and research. It opened my eyes to charming, imaginative and beautiful worlds and landscapes inside the covers of books for children. (My favs are still the Dr Suess series!) Illustrating the book was a fun and a great learning experience :) I'll do it again!

Oh, my very messy room!

What a pity... I'd rather draw the mess, than clean it up!
